Hello
everyone, my name is Geoff, I am a sophomore Mathematics major at Texas Tech
University. My buddy Zack here offered to let me write for his blog, and I am
very grateful to do so! I have a weird excitement trying to share my knowledge
with people. I decided to use my first post to introduce myself. I have been
playing Magic for just over a year and half now, starting during the Dark
Ascension block. My route to where I am now has been a long and windy (...and
expensive) path. I graduated High School early, and while decided to come to
Tech in the spring of 2012, I found
myself being a little socially secluded, fortunately I had friends that were a
grade above me that I could tag along with here at school. Those friends showed
me this beautiful and amazing game. They told me the basics, lay a land for
turn, tap it to produce mana of that color, lay your card. They taught me how
to play at a pretty high level for casual magic I would say (which definitely
helps me later on). With graduation, Christmas, and my birthday, all within a
month of each other, I decided that the best and most efficient way to get
Magic was to buy booster boxes, definitely the right choice right?! After going
to Wal-mart and buying the Havengul Runebinder Blue/Black zombie intro deck and
buying loads of cards, I threw together a semi-solid zombie deck, at least for
casual magic it was! I took a little hiatus, but during the summer I decided to
take Calculus 2 at my local community college, and there was talk of Magic, I
think this was the rekindling and start to my torrential spree of play. Those
guys really showed me the intricacies of the game. This is where I got my
favorite card Ajani Goldmane to this day it is still my favorite card, love the thing
so much! Fast forward to the release of Gatecrash, I had been playing magic on
and off, and only kitchen table, but this is when I decided to go to my first
FNM. Since then I have been progressively improving my skills, and branching
into different formats. I have top 8'd a Pro Tour Qualifier, which Zack did as
well (BY THE WAY ZACK I BEAT YOU IN THE SWISS), finished 3rd at a TCG Max Point
1k, and a countless amount of FNM top 8's. I truly love this game, from the
detail to the art, to the extreme complex plays and interactions with the
cards. I hope I can bring some insightful knowledge to everyone and can better
promote myself as a player and mentor.
Thanks for reading!
Geoff
